Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to provide a thorough analysis of the Korean economy. The course includes following aspects.

Part I: Introduction

— Review of the development process introducing key aspects of the Korean economy including industrial structure, growth performance, and external sector development.

Part II: Industry Analysis

— In-depth analysis of industry sectors will be undertaken, which includes:

—          Overall industry structure: past and present and its evolutionary process

—          Development and Current Status of Manufacturing Sector

—          Current Status and its role in the Korea’s economic development

—          Problems and Prospects of Service Industry

—          Technology based industries in the modern Korean economy

Part III: Policy Issues

—          Fiscal and Monetary Policy: Policy Structure, Major Characteristics and Assessments

—          Competition Policy: Evolution of Korean Chaebol and Relationship with government regulatory framework

—          Social Issues and Economic Policy

Course Requirements & Grading:

— Mid-term Exam ( 40%)

— Final Exam ( 40%): written exam

— Class Participation (20 %): class participation and assignments

—          Social Issues and Economic Policy

—          World Financial Crisis and Korea’s Response

Week 14

—          Korea’s Globalization Policy: WTO and FTA and ODA Policy
